Testing testing – matchy matchy

29th November 2022 / by Richard Gray

Only a minor rant this one, but one I wanted to briefly highlight.

I object at the best of times to having to enter my email address twice when filling out web forms – those confounded ‘confirm your email’ boxes.  Yes, I get why – it’s caught me once or twice, especially on tablet/mobile where it’s easy to mistype – but it’s time consuming, especially on tablet/mobile if you don’t have auto-complete on.

Assuming that the benefits to the recipient of valid email addresses are greater than the risk of losing customers because it’s annoying having to do the same job twice (see my other rant on doing things twice), we’ll have to live with it but please please please don’t force case-sensitive comparison checks between email addresses – that’s properly confusing!

As far as emails are concerned, these DO match – they ARE the same email address…

Grah!

It’s a small issue, I know, but it annoyed me.

That said, the task I was trying to complete was submission of a multi-part form multiple times.  The first part of the form needed details of employees.  The second part of the form needed details of the employer.  One form needed to be submitted for each employee, but the organisation information was the same across all forms.

Fearing I was going to have to re-enter the organisation information multiple times, I was pleasantly surprised when I clicked the ‘Submit another’ button after completing the first form to find that the site had saved my organisation information and was auto-populating this each time I submitted a new form.

Most convenient.

Testing testing – matchy matchy

Only a minor rant here, but here's why I think case-sensitive comparison checks are just plain annoying!

Guide your visitors in a helpful way

Don't make me think - another example of great web usability.

Delight where you can

A possible way to make your visitors smile - and keep coming back to your website. It worked for me!

Why do the same thing twice?

Asking your users to do the same thing twice just makes them annoyed and adds risk to the process.

Put things where people expect to find them

Like small children and lost toys, your website should put things where people expect to find them.
